Samsung Smart Switch Website Updated, Makes It Simpler to Transfer Data

One would think that Samsung’s latest flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones with their near bezel-less design and top-of-the-line hardware are enough to attract consumers towards them, but Samsung wants to make sure the transition is smooth and simple. The South Korean tech giant has updated its Smart Switch website that makes it ever more simpler to transfer content from your phone to your new Galaxy handset.

Smart Switch, which is compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and BlackBerry handsets, lets you transfer content from your phone to a Galaxy device in three ways – directly over Wi-Fi using the Smart Switch app, by connecting your old and new device via USB, or through the Smart Switch computer software. Once you’ve established connection through any one of these options, Smart Switch will guide you through the content you wish to transfer and will do so quickly.

Using the desktop app lets you also backup your phone and Samsung says that the desktop interface makes it easy to restore your content on a new Galaxy smartphone. It also provides a simple way for you to conduct firmware updates.

Keep in mind that Smart Switch will transfer content from any phone or OS to Galaxy devices ranging from Galaxy S2 to the current Galaxy S8 smartphones (including tablets) running Android 4.0 and above. Additionally, certain devices running Android 4.0 and above may not support wireless transfer in which case you will need to use the other two options mentioned. Meanwhile, transfers between Android to Galaxy devices via USB cable require Android 4.3 or above as well as MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) USB support.

While Samsung updates its own Smart Switch app, Apple too has been trying to attract Android users to its iOS platform having recently launched three new ad campaigns for its Move to iOS app, which works in a similar fashion to the Smart Switch, helping you easily transfer essential files to an iOS device.

CIA Reveals It Was Hacked by an Insider Network of Snack Thieves

The Central Intelligence Agency admitted this week that it had been compromised for months in 2013 by a network of high-tech snack thieves.

A report released this week shows the premier US intelligence body discovered that insider hackers had stolen more than $3,300 worth of potato chips, chocolate bars and other snacks from its vending machines.

The culprits weren’t undercover agents or veteran Al-Qaeda chasers, but instead “contractors” – of which the CIA has thousands, doing everything from terror analysis to servicing the machines that answer American spies’ junk food needs.

A CIA Inspector General’s report on the candy cabal was released following a Freedom of Information Act request by BuzzFeed journalist Jason Leopold.

Unsurprisingly for the CIA, the report is heavily redacted – no names, or sources and methods behind the investigation. But it shows that an unidentified contractor figured out how to get snacks without paying.

The machines took stored value payment cards from the FreedomPay company.

The contractor figured out that if you disconnect the cable that connects the machines with FreedomPay’s cloud-based payment systems, they would accept a card that has no more funds.

The culprit told friends who also disconnected the machines’ cords to download snacks for free.

But, of course, the agency finally caught up. After suspicions were raised, CIA officials put surveillance cameras on the machines, and figured out the scam.

The main perpetrator “admitted to originating the idea of how to effect the thefts based on his knowledge of computer networks,” according to the report.

Members of the cabal were rounded up, interrogated and then escorted from the building and fired by their employers.

OnePlus 5 Speed Test Pits It Against Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11; Gold Variant Spotted

Shortly after the official launch of OnePlus 5 last week, the biggest story on the Internet was how the company was claimed to manipulate synthetic benchmark scores with its latest flagship smartphone by an investigative report. While the company’s initial response to the matter was far from convincing, the latest real world speed test comparison has revealed that the OnePlus 5 might actually have the hardware that can back the company’s tall claims to some degree. Separately, a Mint Gold colour variant of the smartphone has also been spotted getting clearance at a Chinese certification site.

In a speed comparison test video, posted on YouTube by Jeremy Ortega, OnePlus 5 can be seen outperforming other smartphones that also feature Snapdragon 835 SoC, i.e., HTC U11 and Samsung Galaxy S8. As a part of the performance test, Ortega launched 20 apps on all three smartphones, one after the other, in two successive rounds. While initial round shows the speed with which any app is launched for the first time, the second one shows the capability of the smartphone to launch an already opened app.

Notably, OnePlus 5 did not just manage to open all the apps faster than the other two smartphones under consideration, it managed to do so without breaking a sweat. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 smartphones managed to go through two test rounds in around 2 minutes 19 seconds and 2 minutes 2 seconds respectively. However, OnePlus 5 managed to go through both rounds in around 1 minute 53 seconds.

OnePlus 5 Speed Test Pits It Against Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11; Gold Variant Spotted

It is important to note that the OnePlus 5 used in the test featured 8GB of RAM while the Samsung Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 both packed 4GB of RAM each. The additional memory is likely to have impacted the performance of latest flagship by OnePlus but it also means that in real-world usage, the smartphone will manage to handle the daily tasks efficiently.

If we go by these results, OnePlus 5 seems to have taken its ‘Flagship Killer’ tag seriously. In our review of OnePlus 5, we said: “With Qualcomm’s speedy processor and the slick new OxygenOS, system and app performance is excellent. The phone uses the ample RAM onboard to ensure things run smoothly. On average, we found around 3.9GB being used, leaving us with about 1.7GB on the 6GB model.”

Finally moving to the other aspect of news, while the company has launched the OnePlus 5 in Midnight Black and Slate Gray colours, Mint Gold colour variant of the smartphone has now been spotted on Chinese certification website TENAA, as per a report by MySmartPrice. To recall, OnePlus 3T was previously offered in Soft Gold colour as well.

Using Painkillers During Periods, Is It Good Or Bad?

How many of our women folk pop painkillers in their mouths to alleviate pain during menstrual cramps? Well! Though this action may give them some temporary relief, in the long run its effects are not as good and encouraging as we think!

A quick peek into the ill effects of painkillers taken during periods will certainly make one think twice before having them to reduce the pain.

Before proceeding further, let us enlighten ourselves as to what causes those cramps, the most annoying part of our cycle. The pain is caused by the temporary cut off of oxygen supply to the uterus, when the muscles in there, contract a little too abruptly resulting in pressing of the nearby blood vessels.

side effects of painkillers during periods

What Do Painkillers Do? There are many non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) available in the market which give instant pain relief. These drugs are supposed to temporarily stop the production of prostaglandin, an important hormone, whose over production during periods can result in cramps.

This hormone helps in a large way in performing some of the vital functions of our body. So inhibiting them frequently can cause many ill effects to our system. Meanwhile, check the diet tips to follow during your periods.

Array

Fortifying With Vitamin Supplements: According to a research, the natural way to alleviate the pain is to take vitamin supplements fortified with B1, D3 and magnesium.

Array

Keeping The Abdominal Region Warm:

This is one sure remedy to this menstrual-related problem. Placing a hot water pack over the abdomen and lower back will bring a lot of comfort.

Array

Stretching Exercises:

Certain yoga poses and stretching exercises are a good and healthy way to reduce pain.

Array

Massaging With Essential Oils: Essential oils like clary sage oil, lavender oil, cypress oil to name a few, have profound effects on massaging and bring some relief.

Array

Having A Herbal Tea: If ayurvedic herbs like ginger and cinnamon are used to make a nice cup of hot tea, then there is nothing to match it to soothe the discomfort.

If the above techniques cannot ease your pain then there might be some underlying medical problem and would need a specialist’s attention. Abnormal conditions such as the growth of fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory diseases, etc. can cause painful periods. Consulting a doctor is the wise thing to do in such situations.

So, next time when you encounter painful periods think twice before gulping a painkiller and if you have to really do so, then take it strictly under a gynaecologist’s supervision.

Also, for every medical problem, there is a solution in this modern era. Rest assured, there is nothing to fear about our health when we tread the path of caution under an expert’s guidance.

Apple Top IT Vendor in 2016, Followed by Samsung and Google: Gartner

Apple was the largest vendor in 2016 with over $218 billion (roughly Rs. 14,05,658 crores) in IT revenue – approximately $79 billion larger than Samsung (with $139 billion or roughly Rs. 8,96,203 crores) at second spot, Gartner said on Tuesday.

Google with $90.1 billion (roughly Rs. 5,81,641 crores) was third, Microsoft with $85.7 billion at fourth spot, and IBM with $77.8 billion was at fifth position when it came to IT revenue in 2016.

“The needs of IT buyers are shifting. CEOs are focused on growth and are more focused on realising business outcomes from their IT spend,” said John-David Lovelock, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst at Gartner.

“The ‘Nexus of Forces’ has been the focus of attention for many years. However, the impact of digital business is giving rise to new categories,” he added.

‘Nexus of Forces’ refers to the convergence of social, mobility, cloud and information that drive new business scenarios.

This is for the first time that Gartner published a ranking of the top 100 largest tech companies in the world based on estimates for their revenue across IT (excluding communication services) and component market segments.

Apple Top IT Vendor in 2016, Followed by Samsung and Google: Gartner

“The top three vendors (Apple, Samsung Vendor Group and Google) can attribute much of their size to their solid alignment with the ‘Nexus of Forces’,” the report added.

As enterprises increasingly digitalize their products and services, digital giants (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent) can become involved in, or even take over, the digital experience.

Gartner predicted that by 2021, 20 percent of all activities an individual engages in will involve at least one of the top seven digital giants.

“Digital giants effectively become gatekeepers for any business that delivers digital content and services to consumers,” Lovelock added.

The focus of the digital giants has mainly been in the consumer, citizen and employee world.

Because the digital giants have not yet been as focused on business to business (B2B), there is opportunity for other companies to take the lead.

The Galaxy Note 8 Will Be The Most Expensive Samsung Smartphone Ever Once It Launches In September

The Galaxy Note 8 will be the most expensive Samsung smartphone ever once it launches in the second half of September, according to prolific leaker Evan Blass.

While the price tag is something that fans may have expected, Blass’s statement that the Galaxy Note 8 will launch in late September contradicts reports that the smartphone will be unveiled in late August.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Could Cost $1,000

According to a VentureBeat report by Blass, Samsung will price the Galaxy Note 8 at €999 in Europe, which translates to a price tag of as low as $900 and as high as $1,000 in the United States, depending on currency fluctuations.

In comparison, the current flagship Galaxy S8 starts at a price of $750. Adding at least $150 to that price for the upcoming smartphone makes sense.

If the Galaxy Note 8 does indeed launch within the price range of $900 to $1,000, it will share another trait with Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8. It is widely believed that the price of the premium device will start at $1,000 and will also be the most expensive smartphone ever offered by Apple.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Launch Date

The other big piece of news in Blass’s article is the launch date of the second half of September for the Galaxy Note 8, which is against a previous report that Samsung is planning to announce the Galaxy Note 8 on Aug. 26.

For the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung rushed its production and launch date to beat Apple’s iPhone 7 to the market. We all know how that turned out for Samsung, as the Galaxy Note 7 was recalled twice and eventually shut down due to its exploding batteries.

A late September launch date for the Galaxy Note 8 will align the smartphone’s release with Apple’s new iPhone models, as the company is also expected to unveil the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone 8 in September. Such a release time frame will also give Samsung more time to do everything it could to avoid the same embarrassment that it suffered with the Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Specs

Blass also reported on the specifications of the Galaxy Note 8, with the smartphone expected to feature a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge AMOLED display found in the Galaxy S8. The Galaxy Note line traditionally offered a bigger screen compared to the Galaxy S devices, but the Galaxy Note 8 will instead bank on other features to differentiate it from the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+.

The Galaxy Note 8 will use the same Exynos 8895 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipsets as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, but it will offer higher RAM at 6 GB. It will also be the first Samsung smartphone with dual rear cameras, which will be arranged horizontally beside the flash and heart rate sensor.

Confirming previous reports, Blass said that the fingerprint scanner of the Galaxy Note 8 will still be at the back of the smartphone, as Samsung reportedly encountered issues in embedding the feature into its display. The position of the fingerprint scanner, however, will be moved to be farther away from the rear camera lens.

The Galaxy Note 8 will be powered by a 3,300 mAh battery, as Samsung avoids the trouble that came with the 3,500 mAh battery of the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung has also made certain improvements to the device’s software, including giving the S Pen stylus more functions.

Will Samsung Bounce Back From The Galaxy Note 7 Fiasco?

The Galaxy Note 8 is a very important product for Samsung, as it hopes that the smartphone will allow the company to continue its recovery from the failed Galaxy Note 7.

The revelations made by Blass have not yet been confirmed by Samsung, but his reliability is among the best in the business. Will the device that he described in his report overshadow the Galaxy Note 7’s shortcomings? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Weekly poll: is the OnePlus 5 everything you were hoping it to be?

The OnePlus 5 is finally official so let’s see what you think of it. Is it everything you expected, everything you wanted it to be? Or were you disappointed.

The benchmark cheating probably doesn’t matter much, the phone will play any Android game out there as well as possible this half of 2017. And you can still brag about the 8 gigs of RAM.

The confusion about the “lossless zoom” is more annoying – 1.6x optical then digital zoom isn’t great. We didn’t love the tele photos, but at least it enables Portrait mode and the main camera is excellent.

The pricing is higher than the outgoing model, but it’s no surprise either – OnePlus upped the price of each new phone it introduced, even the fairly minor upgrade that was the 3T got a $40 bump. In terms of value for money, the OnePlus 5 is still among the best.

Perhaps you were hoping for some extra perks on the new model, beyond the new chipset and dual camera. Well, the display is the same, the base option has the same amount of memory (6GB/64GB) as last year’s model, the company didn’t add waterproofing or a bigger battery. At least it didn’t take away the headphone jack. That’s something, right? And the design is, uh, “new”.

Fear of trees and rain? Yes, it exists!

We have heard about how people fear clowns and things like water and heights. But there are several offbeat phobias that may appear trivial to you, but which trigger deep anxiety…
1) Xanthophobia: Those who fear of the colour yellow are afraid of anything in that hue, including the sun and maybe your yellow umbrella.
2) Hylophobia: Greenery can also trigger deep fear in folks. It’s called Hylophobia.
3) Ombrophobia: This describes fear of rain and can make people want to stay indoors in the wet weather.
4) Nomophobia: We may all relate to this one – it’s the fear of being without mobile phone coverage.
5) Deipnophobia: Is the fear of dinner parties. Yes, it’s a thing.
6) Selenophobia: This is the fear of the moon. Romantics, if you harbour this fear, you’re losing out on a lovely nocturnal view.

7) Genuphobia: The fear of one’s own or another person’s knees or of the act of kneeling.
8) Somniphobia: The fear of falling asleep, called Somniphobia can adversely affect health, apart from causing anxiety and distress.
9) Papyrophobia: This fear of paper extends to any type: wet, dry, torn, plain or printed paper.
