Vivo Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution Unveiled at MWC Shanghai 2017

Vivo on Wednesday at the start of MWC Shanghai 2017 showcased its new Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution, as well as its Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Photography Solution targeted for backlighting and night scene photography, and a Hi-Fi solution with an customised DAC decoding chip. As of now, no Vivo device with the fingerprint scanning tech is in production, but will be showing the tech on prototype devices.

The Vivo Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution is based on Qualcomm technology, and the US-based telecommunications giant separately detailed its own display, glass, and metal fingerprint scanning solutions at the tradeshow. Qualcomm will be showcasing its own under display fingerprint scanning technology at MWC Shanghai 2017 using the Vivo Xplay6, as seen in the above image. Like Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor for Display, Vivo’s solution can scan through 1200-micron thick OLED display stacks.

Vivo claims its under-display fingerprint solution is the first to be “demonstrated by a smartphone manufacturer.” The Chinese company said that since the Vivo Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution doesn’t require physical button for the sensor, the solution enables the use of a “true full-screen display and an integrated unibody and mechanical waterproofing design.”

In a statement, the company elaborated to say, “In Vivo’s R&D plan, fingerprint scanning will not be carried out by an independent button or region. It will be realised more subtly under the screen, behind the metal shell, or even in the frame.”

Vivo adds, “based on ultrasonic technology, the fingerprint recognition technology can be further expanded to realize user interaction, such as gesture recognition, security verification and other fields, which will greatly enhance user experience.”

Coming to Vivo’s other announcements from its keynote at the tradeshow, let’s start with the new independent Vivo DSP Photography Solution. The company claims the new tech will greatly “improve backlighting and night scene photography”.

Vivo says the DSP Photography Solution is designed to help users take pictures with “high quality and accurate exposure, and adjust the brightness of the image to make it better correspond to what is actually seen by the human eye.” It adds that the photography processing speed has also seen a boost.

The Vivo DSP Photography Solution allows smartphones to take multiple RAW images quickly, and can also reduce shot noise for night scene photography to a large extent. The DSP will also improve the beautification effects of Vivo’s Face Beauty Mode.

Finally, we come to Vivo’s new Hi-Fi audio solution including new customised DAC decoding chip and headphone amplifier technology. The new solution improves SNR, dynamic range, distortion, and output power, delivering an SNR of 122dB, dynamic range of 120dB, distortion of -111dB, and output power of 2.2VRms. The headphone amplifier utilises new processing technology to improve power efficiency as well as the overall audio experience.

At Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017, Qualcomm announced its new generation fingerprint sensors based on ultrasonic fingerprint technology, an upgrade over its Sense ID fingerprint technology. The sensors even unlock devices underwater, and work through displays. This last is especially pertinent in 2017, which both Samsung and Apple expected to release smartphones with fingerprint sensors embedded in their displays. Separately, the company also announced that its automotive platforms will be integrated in the infotainment system used inside upcoming vehicles manufactured by Chinese carmaker Geely.

First talking about the fingerprint scanning and authentication technology, Qualcomm says “The suite of features consists of sensors for Display, Glass and Metal, detection of directional gestures, and underwater fingerprint match and device wake-up.”

Notably, this new generation of technology is the first commercially announced “integrated ultrasonic-based mobile solution” that can detect heart beat and blood flow for improved authentication, as per Qualcomm’s claims.

Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor for Display is capable of scanning through OLED display stacks of up to 1200 microns (micrometres), along with enrolling and matching, and Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Glass and Metal can scan through up to 800 microns of cover glass and up to 650 microns of aluminium, the company said in its release. Comparatively, the previous generation was able to scan through up to 400 microns for both glass and metal.

“Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Glass and Metal are designed to be compatible with the recently announced Snapdragon 660 and 630 Mobile Platforms, and Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Display, Glass and Metal are designed to be compatible with future Snapdragon Mobile Platforms and non-Snapdragon platforms,” the company said.
Qualcomm says that in comparison to the previous generation, the new fingerprint solutions offer greater design flexibility to operators and OEMs. The Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for glass and metal are said to be available to OEMs this month, and will expectedly arrive with commercial devices in the first half of next year. On the other hand, Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor for Display is expected to be available for OEMs in the fourth quarter of this year.

The company has said that it will be showcasing the new sensors for display and metal along with Vivo through a modified version of Vivo XPlay 6 smartphone at MWC Shanghai 2017.

Moving on to the second part of the story, Qualcomm has announced that Chinese carmaker Geely will be using the automotive platforms developed by the former for the infotainment systems in its upcoming vehicles. These infotainment systems come with integrated 4G LTE modem and use the Snapdragon 820Am automotive platform. Geely vehicles that will feature Snapdragon automotive platforms are expected to be available from 2020.

Select Geely models also be making use of the Snapdragon 820Am variant of the platform with an integrated X12 LTE modem, supporting up to 600 Mbps downlink and 150 Mbps uplink speeds, the company said in its release. This solution has been designed specifically to provide “exceptional in-car cloud connectivity to support key features, such as over-the-air updates, navigation with real-time updates, news and local information, emergency assistance and diagnostics,” Qualcomm said.

 

Honor 8 Pro With 6GB RAM, 4000mAh Battery, Dual Rear Cameras Unveiled in India

Huawei Terminal brand Honor launched its new smartphone on Friday – Honor 8 Pro in India. Notably, this is the same smartphone that was launched in China in February under the moniker Honor V9 before making its way to Europe and the UK in April as the Honor 8 Pro .

Some of the highlight features on the Honor 8 Pro include a dual camera setup, massive 4000mAh battery and an impressive 6GB of RAM. The smartphone will be available in Navy Blue and Midnight Black colour choices in India when it will be made available from the first half of July. The Honor 8 Pro price in India has not yet been revealed.

Talking about the dual camera setup on the Honor 8 Pro, it sports two 12-megapixel sensors with f/2.2 aperture, laser autofocus, LED flash, and 4K video recording. One sensor takes the images in RGB while the other takes them in monochrome. At front, there is an 8-megapixel sensor for taking selfies as well.

The dual-SIM Honor 8 Pro runs Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.1 skin on top and sports a 5.7-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) LTPS LCD display. It is powered by Kirin 960 (4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz + 4 Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.4GHz) coupled with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM. It comes with 128GB inbuilt storage which can be expanded further by using the hybrid microSD card slot (up to 256GB).

The connectivity options on the Honor 8 Pro include 4G LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi, USB Type-C, Bluetooth 4.2, and NFC. The smartphone houses a 4000mAh battery and comes with a fingerprint sensor at the back.

While the pricing of the smartphone has not been announced by the company just yet, Allen Wang, Director, Product Centre, Huawei India Consumer Business Group, told IANS: “Honor 8 Pro is one of the best Honor phone so far and will be priced in the affordable price segment.”

To recall, the Honor 8 Pro was launched with a price tag of EUR 549 (roughly Rs. 39,500) in Europe.

Additionally, the Honor 8 Pro’s retail box could be turned into a Google Cardboard viewer for VR experience as well. The smartphone comes with the Galaxy on Fire 3 and Jaunt VR apps pre-installed. Further, the company says that it has partnered with Gameloft and GoPro for in-built apps (including the GoPro Quik app) and is currently in talks with major e-tailers for exclusive online release.
