Many people know Galveston Island for its over 30 miles of beaches and interesting museums. However, there are also three academic institutions on the island that are worth exploring. Spend your time while riding the shuttle from Hobby Airport to Galveston getting to know these schools. You may decide that you want to apply to a school on the island and live the beach life year-round.
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
Established in 1981, The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is the oldest medical school in the state. The campus contains an academic medical center, a school of medicine, schools for nursing and the health professions, and a graduate school for biomedical sciences. Over 3000 students study here. This school employs over 11,000 employees, making it a major employer for the area.
Texas A&M University at Galveston
This university offers liberal arts, engineering, business, and science degrees with a marine focus. Over 2000 students study here. Club sports offered include fishing, soccer, volleyball, and lacrosse.
The Marine Academy on campus trains students in navigation and ship operations. Graduates of the Academy become officers in the United States Merchant Marine.
Galveston College is a public community college with over 2000 students in for-credit programs. The college offers academic courses, work skills seminars, and continuing education. If you cannot commit to a full four-year university degree, or already have a bachelor’s degree, a community college may be right for you.
